Richard Smidt Obituary

Richard John Smidt passed on February 7,2022 at the age of 80.

Rich was born August 6,1941 in Forest City, Iowa to John and Jenny Smidt.

He married his wife Marsha Sheimo on December 30, 1961, in Buffalo Center, Iowa.

In 1980 Rich and the family moved to Longmont, Colorado. He was the manager of Reynolds Cattle Company for several years.

Rich was a skilled horseman. From training, riding, and breeding performance horses he enjoyed it all. He also found pleasure working with draft horses. Teaching others about horsemanship, in his own unique way, was not always a pleasant experience at the time for the student or for others he was helping, though most now can appreciate their “teaching moments”.

He was a tough man who always spoke his mind. Once you really got to know him you realized beneath his rough exterior he had soft heart, especially for children.

He is survived by his wife Marsha Smidt of Firestone, Colorado, son Chad Smidt (wife DeeDee) of Fort Collins, daughter Kelly Smedley (husband Alex) and grandson Lyncoln of Orlando, FL. Also surviving are three of Rich’s sisters, Joann, Mary, Sandy and one brother Alvin.

A celebration of Rich’s life will be held on Wednesday, March 2nd at The Ranch Complex in Loveland, CO. It will be in the First National Bank Building, Morehouse Hall from 4-6pm.
